January Activities Inside the Church

While the weather is cold I have been concentrating on working inside  the Church.  My Old Testament Festivals for New Testament believers class has ended. I established contact with Martini Lutheran Church in Baltimore and hope to involve them in local  Baltimore outreach in the spring.

Saint Johns Lutheran Church in Springfield Virginia had an Ethnic Mission breakfast and I attended as the Apple of His Eye Jewish (and Gentilish) Mission representative. Other ethnic ministries represented were two West African, two Eritrean, Arabic speaking Christians, Hispanic, and a Muslim outreach.  John Nunes from Lutheran World Relief was there.

I am running a node of Steve Cohen’s Outreach telecasts at my home church, Bethany in Alexandria Virginia.  This will continue into May.

Christmas and Chanukkah

Merry Christmas to all.  In this season we celebrate both Christmas and Chanukkah.  Chanukkah is the Jewish Festival of lights and celebrates a miracle that happened some 60 years before Messiah came.  The Greeks who were  in charge at the time tried to stamp out the Jewish temple worship and the teaching of Torah.  A group of Jewish zealots resisted and finally drove out the Greeks who had desecrated the Temple.  At the rededication there was only enough oil left to burn for one day and it would take 7 days to produce more that was fit to use in the temple.   The one day supply burned for all 7 days.  This miracle is what is celebrated today.  Jesus celebrated it in his time too.  As the Maccabees preserved and passed down the light of scripture, let us pass on the light of Messiah to those who do not know him yet.

From all of my family (Including Jason and Kendra who are not pictured as they were in Illinois) to all of yours, wishes for a blessed season in the light of Messiah.

Following is some of the initial thinking in our process

Mission

Equipping local congregations to share the transforming love of Messiah Jesus with their Jewish friends and neighbors.

Primary Objective

Reach the 2,000,000 Jewish people in medium and small U.S. cities, who have little or no sustained Gospel ministry, with the news of their Messiah in a sensitive and effective way through a network of trained, local congregations.

Secondary Objectives

1) Make available to any local church training in the Jewish roots of their faith and study tours to Israel that

will spiritually deepen their people.

2) Support CMJ work in Israel through regular presentation of that work to constituent congregations of CMJ-USA.

Operating Guidelines

·        Although we will happily serve individuals committed to any of our goals, the emphasis will be on developing knowledge and skills in local congregations for the work of Gospel ministry among Jewish people and the deepening of their Christian faith.

·        Although we have a ‘natural’ constituency among evangelical Anglicans, our work will be ecumenical by design. The ultimate objective for any city outreach is a consortium of Christian congregations, working in a sustained partnership, to reach Jewish people in their city with news of their Messiah.

‘Product’ Development. For the Co-laborer work we will use a progressive program of teaching and training that equips congregations to reach their neighbors and eventually become catalytic leaders in that outreach with other congregations. At this point we think that involves three tracks of teaching/training. Material from these tracks can be ‘re-packaged’ for use with Partner and Friend congregations.

1.     Developing a Jewish understanding of the Bible and Christian discipleship through extensive Jewish roots teaching. This is for the dual purpose of authentically relating to Jewish people and being better followers of Jesus. This, when possible, involves a visit to Israel to enrich biblical study and understanding.

2.     Training and practice in the process of sharing with friends and acquaintances the news that Jesus is the Messiah, sent by God for Jewish people first, and then the nations, not for the purpose of establishing a Gentile religion.

3.     Modifying the life of the congregation so that it is more rather than less welcoming to Jewish people. This is the most experimental track, and involves a combination of special services (Feasts, Shabbat), style of services, greater emphasis on home worship and teaching, and targeted small groups.

A Warm but Overcast Fall Day on the National Mall

It was a grey overcast day, but people were out on the Mall taking advantage of the relative warmth for this time of year.  I distributed 600 fliers.  Among the people who stopped to talk were two atheists.  One had been convinced by philosophy and the other by science not to believe in God.  The one who had been persuaded by philosophy said that the question “What do YOU think of Jesus?” is important for everyone to think about and to answer for themselves. He agreed that in today’s society a lot of people never consider the question and that bringing it to their attention is important.  I encouraged him to continue to explore the question himself.  Please pray that the Holy Spirit will open his eyes to the one who is THE TRUTH  (absolute) as he seeks his own understanding of his own (subjective) truth.

A lady who took a flier looked back, smiled, and held out her necklace so I would be sure to see the cross and the Star of David.  Two other believers thanked me for what I was doing.

I always appreciate encouragement, and in this time of Thanksgiving and Advent anticipation of Yeshua’s coming it is much appreciated.  Many good and worthy causes are competing for your support at this time. I don’t do this often, so I am asking for your patience as you prayerfully consider the following supports:

First of all I ask for your prayers.  Prayer is always “the winning shot”.  Please pray for those who accept our fliers that they will be drawn by the Holy Spirit (It’s not by my powers of persuasion and never has been) to Yeshua.  Next please pray for the ones that do not accept fliers.  Many of them are believers and I appreciate that they do not take them so that I will have more for the unbelievers, but many do not believe, or have put the Lord on the ‘back burner’ in their lives.  Please pray that the Lord will surround them with a cloud of witnesses and not give up on them until they draw their final breath.

Also pray for workers in the field. Pray that believers who have, or have never considered sharing their faith with friends, coworkers, or relatives will be given the opportunity to do so and the grace to follow through by the Holy Spirit   If you find yourself drawn by the Spirit to be a sower in God’s field, please contact me or someone in your area who can help you learn to share your faith and take the next step by actually doing it.  Many well meaning Christians take classes and seminars on faith sharing, but without stepping out in faith to actually do it they remain afraid to act and what they have learned remains “head knowledge”.

Finally, if you have given to your local church and to those charities that you find otherwise worthy, please also consider financial support for Apple of His Eye central (in St. Louis Mo) and for this mission in the Nation’s Capital and Baltimore area. We are a Recognized Service Organization of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, but we are also a faith-based mission with no direct financial support from our central church body.  We rely on the free-will gifts of our brothers and sisters in Christ to continue our mission. Currently our staff includes Steve Cohen: our founder in Missouri, Lisa Schnurr; Executve Asst to Founder and Itinerary Coordinator for Steve, Alexy Shepelev; our representative in Moscow (who produces a Russian language messianic podcast) and myself.

Where does the money go? Undesignated gifts to Apple of His Eye go to the support the central office. Support for the rest of our small staff must be specifically designated as a gift for them to reach their ministry.  By Apple of His Eye policy an individual must raise a fund of $85,000 before they get any kind of regular monthly distribution.  Normally people who enter this field begin by going from church to church to raise the $85,000 before they start actually doing the outreach. I decided to take the faith-based principle one step further and start the outreach first, relying on the generosity of God’s people to help sustain it as I developed a story by doing the work.  I am retired so I am not totally reliant on these funds for day-to-day living, but mission is not free of cost.  Thanks to a couple of small circuit Ablaze grants to Apple of His Eye for this mission, and a few greatly appreciated gifts from individuals, the continuing support of three local congregations: Bethany Lutheran, Alexandria; St. Johns, Franconia; and Prince of Peace, Springfield, I have been able to continue now for two years. It is my hope that by the Grace of God I will be able to continue for at least one more year on this basis. Studies have shown that it normally takes four years for a new mission to become self-sustaining.  If it appears that support is building (prayer, participation, and contributions) I will continue.  Otherwise, having tended the fig tree for three years I will assume the Lord has other plans.

Again, please pardon my appeal, I don’t do it often (although I do support our central office when they put out their own appeals).

Oh, the young elf… he is the youngest street musician I have seen on the Mall.  He came with his older brother who was looking out for him.  I had a conversation with his brother.  They are Mormons but they were just trying to make a little extra money, not evangelizing for their faith. He asked what group I was with and I told him.  I told him a little about the Lutheran Church and the Reformation.  He wished me luck with my outreach.  Please pray for that family that they would come to know the true Christ of Christmas.

Help the Homeless Walkathon, New Grandson Hospitalized, Football Gospel

Last weekend my wife Lois and I participated in the Help the Homeless Walkathon in Washington DC.  In my outreach I have regular conversations with several homeless and others who have been marginalized in this economy. It was interesting that the skating rink by the National Gallery of Art is open already. Lois ans I stopped and watched the skaters a little while after the walk and a lunch.

On 18 September we welcomed Logan Augustus Korb to the world.  In mid October he started to have troubles with his stomach and was hospitalized for tests.  Eventually we learned that he has allergies to both Milk and Soy (including Mothers Milk). It took a couple of weeks to figure this out and involved a lot of Grandma time supporting Andrea and Christopher. While Grandma was happy to get more time with Logan both she and Mom were pretty frazzled.  Grandpa was often left to take care of Ike, our Lab who missed Grandma a lot.  We are all Thankful that his condition was diagnosed, is manageable,  and is something that he should grow out of in time.

A lot of my time of late has been taken preparing and delivering a course on “Old Testament Festivals for New Testament Believers”.  My mission is both outside the Church and inside the Church. Outside the Church I bring the Gospel to anyone who will listen, and to the Jew first.  Inside the Church I help Christians understand their Jewish roots a little more and encourage them to reach out to everyone.  The class includes the major Biblical festivals as well as some other occasions that are observed by the Jewish community today.

We have already covered

Passover
Counting the Omer
Yam HaShoah
Yom HaZikaron
Yom HaAtzmaut
Lag B’Omer
Shavuot
17th Of Tammuz
Tisha B’Av
Bein haMetzarim

Last week we covered most of the modern day celebration of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.  I’ll finish a couple of points on them and then go on to Sukkot this Sunday. After that we will look at

Shemini Atzeret / Simchat Torah
Chanukah
Purim
Tu Bishvat
Shabbat

On Sunday we joined a few tens of thousands of our closest friends at FedEx Stadium to watch the Redskins vs Cowboys football game.  The Redskins lost by 3 points in overtime, it was a great game.  The crowd always makes me think of the great multitude, too numerous to count, from every tribe and nation when Messiah returns.  If you look at the crowd it looks like everyone is there and there is no more room.  It is easy to just set back and enjoy the experience.  But if you look closely there are many empty seats.  If this were Heaven  those would be the many places that were bought and paid for with the Blood of the Lamb that will be left unfilled because no one shared the Gospel, or if they did the individual continued to reject the atoning covering provided by Yeshua to their death when it was too late to accept it.  The ball has been kicked to us.  Not everyone will listen, but it is our responsibility to play the game full out. Lord, enable us to be steadfast even when what we see around us would be discouraging.

Please pray for this mission and, if you are able, please support our outreach with a gift above and beyond your offering to your local church. Remember when you do to designate the gift for AOHE-DC or the funds will not come to this part of the mission, but to the Apple of His Eye central office fund (they can use support too but that’s a separate issue).

AOHE Central: Positions now open with The Apple of His Eye Mission Society!

We are looking for a few good men and women.

If you know of someone who might be interested, please forward this e-mail to them. Thank you – Steve Cohen

1. Alexey Shepelev, our missionary in Russia, is in need of an itinerary coordinator for his speaking schedules here in the USA. This is a part-time position from home which requires computer knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word and Filemaker (or willingness to learn), a good phone persona and must be a self starter who is highly organized and detail oriented.

2. We are looking for caring people who sense God’s calling to serve in reaching the Lost Sheep of Israel. A college degree required, and a demonstrated passion for reaching the lost is essential.

YOU DO NOT have to be Jewish to serve with The Apple of His Eye, but you do have to be a follower of the Jewish Messiah, Jesus. Full, part-time and volunteers are being sought NOW.

*Editors Note: To be fair, it should be noted that these are NOT salaried positions, you will rely on the free will contributions of individuals and congregations specifically to your part of the work. Unspecified contributions to Apple of His Eye in general WILL NOT be apportioned to you. This is not unusual for missionaries in the the LCMS. Still, I have found that Kingdom work is worth it.

FROM: The Apple of His Eye Mission Society MO – Thank You For Your Support!

SHALOM! Thank You!

Your prayers and support during this unexpected fall season of opportunity at the baseball games has been an enormous blessing to us. Now that the season is over and the St. Louis Cardinals have won their 11th World Series, there will be a victory parade Sunday at 4 PM. We plan to be there with this new broadside (click here). I hear that even the rally squirrel will make an appearance :-)

Please pray for the thousands of seeds planted over the last month of games. Pray that recipients might take seriously the reality of eternal life in heaven available through faith in Y’shua our Messiah.

Your continuing support (click here to support now) makes it possible for us to go and grow. Please feel free to pass this on to others and share in the celebration.

From AOHE St Louis: The Citation for Broadsiding by Busch Stadium has been QUASHED! PTL!

Three weeks ago, 4th year Seminarian, Nate Hill, was out broadsiding with me across from Bush Stadium when he was given a citation to appear in court for “soliciting” on “private” property while standing on the public sidewalk.

We brought this to our attorney, Rick Nelson, from American Liberties Institute in Orlando, Florida. He in turn took this back to the same St. Louis City attorneys we have been dealing with since our Federal Court victory a few years ago.

Following a review, they, in agreement with city prosecutors, agreed that our First Amendment rights were violated and the citation was quashed. Further more they indicated that the sidewalk is public property even where the MetroLink interfaces with the sidewalk.

So last week during game one of the World Series, we went back and indeed were not hindered while distributing our tracts. Now that there will be a game 6 back in St. Louis, we will be back on Wednesday (weather permitting) to bring the Gospel with a brand new revision of this broadside.

Click here to see the new broadside for game 6

We are ever so thankful for your prayers. If the Cardinals win, there will be a huge parade downtown St. Louis and I would invite you to come help us distribute a new broadside that will be written especially for that event. Your help in planting seeds would be much appreciated.

Please help us continue our mission efforts with your support.
